3D Printed Soap Extruder Discs: What Are They and How Do They Work?"

If you're new to soap making, you've probably seen those beautifully shaped soaps at markets and wondered — how do they get them so perfectly formed? The answer is a soap extruder, and the secret weapon is the disc.

What is a soap extruder disc?

A soap extruder (sometimes called a Caulking gun) is a tool that pushes soap through a shaped disc to create consistent, uniform shapes. The disc is what determines the final shape of your soap — swap the disc, change the shape. It's that simple.

What you'll need to get started

  • A standard extruder (Caulking)gun
  • Soap extruder discs in your chosen shape
  •  Soap Dough
  • A mould or surface to extrude onto

Step-by-step: using soap extruder discs

  1. Prepare your soap base — Condition your soap dough until its soft and pliable enough to push through the extruder.  It should be soft enough to push through the extruder but not so soft it loses its shape.
  2. Load the extruder — pack your soap dough into the barrel of the extruder gun firmly, removing any air pockets.
  3. Attach your disc — choose your shape and screw the disc onto the end of the extruder.
  4. Extrude your soap — squeeze or turn the trigger slowly and steadily, guiding the soap onto your surface or into a mould.
  5. Slice and cure — once extruded, slice your soap to your desired length and leave to cure as needed.

Choosing the right disc size

Extruder discs come in different sizes — typically 18mm, 23mm, 24mm, and 55mm. The size refers to the diameter of the disc opening. Smaller sizes are great for detailed work and smaller moulds, while larger sizes are ideal for bigger batches and bolder shapes.

Tips for best results

  • Work quickly — soap can firm up fast, especially in cooler weather
  • Clean your discs between uses with warm water
  • Experiment with layering colours for extra visual impact
